What Am I Doing? Where Am I Going?
What Is Happening Now? What Happens Next?
Who Am I Really?
1) Guidance into where we source from.
2) How we influence our choices in the moment, what is our long range focus?
3) How does viewing perspective of the moment inform outcome?
4) How do we choose this particular arrangement? What can we get rid of to stay completely real all the time?
5) How dance informs & defines our experience, our self identity, our self empowerment.
Stuart Phillips is & has been Devotionally Performing & Teaching Improvisational Contact Dance for over 26 years throughout the US, Canada & New Zealand, with a European tour late fall 2013, & been Practicing, Performing & Teaching Improvisational Dance for over 32 years.
A Dança como Metáfora Pessoal Profunda
O Que Faço? Para Onde Vou?
O Que Está a Acontecer Agora? O Que Vai Acontecer A Seguir?
Quem Sou Eu Realmente?
Through technical and playful exercises as well as guided improvisations, this workshop is dedicated to improve and enhance our ability to listen to the space – inner and outer as one unified environment – and engage fully with our life, our community and our environment. Simply being present in space without preconceived ideas of our expression and potential. Letting the truth of this simple expression fill our body and voice while exploring a true contact with our environment, in close body encounters as much as through physical distance. Watching carefully the story unfolding and contemplating our creation. This is the base of our research and discovery where each participant is always encouraged to open and extend further his/her vocal and movement repertoire.
In movement, it focuses on making the body available to empower effortless dynamics to transfer weight, find rhythm and impulse. Understanding and improving body-mechanic with coordination and breathing exercises, intern and micro movements exercises such as Tai Chi, Qi Qong, Release and Somatic practice. Working at anchoring our body and improving its fluidity, leading to greater support, and lively travels in space. Introducing games such as exploring our personal relationship with others and our surroundings through touch and distance. Taking our imagination to further depth and plunging into a more truthful expression of our Self. Letting the quality of ‘just being in the space’, altogether “Being true to oneself” slowly emerge and expand as much in performance as in our daily expression.
Improvisation Circles come to enrich this research just like the creation of Sound Spaces comes to feed our expression of the moment. Thanks to making a true connection between movement, voice and breath; the pleasure to play with words and melodies also emerges. By sharpening our senses, this discipline inspires new forms of body and vocal expressions; leading to fully inhabit a character whether classical, danced and/or sung. Just like a laboratory of live arts; time of sharing, exchange and freestyle improvisations come to punctuate this subtle and technical work. This workshop is an opportunity to further develop our ability to improvise and ride our deepest expression through time and space in an effortless manner while widening our skills and understanding of the world we live in.

I would like to focus on what’s necessary to have a non-verbal dance talk in contact improvisation: simplicity, listening, awareness, openness, body reading, clarity, intuition, improvisation. To get into softness, flow and relaxation, i meanwhile use a lot of images, as well as videos, helpful aids and sounds.

"Bernd Knappe is a rare teacher, I met him in dance, and what I experienced it got me totally. He is full of ideas, he surprises himself and the dance partner at the same time, he is very precise and sensitive. So, in the end everything works and you float, you feel exactly what is happening. You feel safe while you get into situations that are truly new and at the same time you wonder how playfully your body seeks balance and strength. You wonder how he is perfectly grounded, how his body is perfectly connected. He has a clear grasp of what they are doing and knows everything you do. And moreover he spreads around infectiously good mood..." Zita Pavlistova (DRUNA movement center, Prague, Czech Republic)
" The soft, gentle approach and sharing of Contact Improvisation of Bernd Knappe brings together in a harmonious way softness, strength and precision. His teaching is sensible and caring that nobody is excluded. A playful pleasure to be, learn and dance with Bernd."
Prem Jivan (Studio Experimental, Bucharest, Romania)
"... What I really admired was the way he integrated people, while meeting each of us in contact, jam sessions, welcoming us with all that we are "inside" and "outside", in a very respectful manner ..." Dora Deac (Psychotherapist, Romania)
